The Ultimate Road Trip Itinerary for New Zealand Tourists

Updated on Sep 25, 2024 | New Zealand eTA

Travelers who have come back from a New Zealand road trip often complain that it ruined them, as now they do not find any other road trip as fun as New Zealand. If New Zealand is on your go-to countries list, then you must add a "road trip" to your to-do list in New Zealand.

However, before we begin, as a traveler, you must know what New Zealand's tour and travel guidelines are.

It is said that a road trip in New Zealand is so amazing that it can ruin other trips for you. Many travelers said that their New Zealand road trip set their expectations so high that their other road trips now feel less exciting.

For international travelers, a valid New Zealand tourist visa is required (except for the visa-waiver countries). However, in July 2019, the New Zealand Immigration Agency and government introduced NZeTA for the visa-waiver countries.

If you are coming from a visa-waiver country, apply for NZeTA and avoid any hassle in your journey from the start.

After you get your NZeTA, here is a 14-day road trip itinerary.

Day 1-3: Auckland

Begin your trip in Auckland. As it is the largest city in New Zealand, you will find many modern places to explore here. Spend a day at the city center or visit the Sky Tower for amazing views and checking out the vibrant waterfront area.

On day 2, a tour to Waiheke Island is considerable. It's just a short ferry ride away to beautiful wineries and beaches.

Use day 3 to visit the Waitakere Ranges, west of Auckland. Here you'll find lush forests and black sand beaches like Piha.

Day 4-5: Rotorua

For travelers interested in exploring the geothermal activity, this day is great for exploration. Also, a trip to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is also a great activity to see colorful hot springs and geysers. Don't miss a traditional Maori cultural show and hangi dinner.

Day 6-7: Taupo and Tongariro National Park

Make your way to Lake Taupo and you can hop on a boat trip to see the rock carvings of Maori. If you're feeling adventurous, try skydiving or bungee jumping.

Next, visit Tongariro National Park. One of the best day hikes in the country is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, so if you are up for the challenge, go for it.

Day 8-9: Wellington

On the 8th day of your New Zealand road trip, you can drive to Wellington, New Zealand's capital city. Visit Te Papa, the national museum, and take the cable car up to the Botanic Gardens for great city views. Don't forget to check out the cool cafes and bars on Cuba Street.

Day 10: Ferry to South Island

On your day 10, to visit the South Island, travel to Picton by ferry from Wellington. You can bet on this as a beautiful journey through the Cook Strait takes about 3 hours.

Day 11-12: Abel Tasman National Park

From Picton, drive to Abel Tasman National Park. Spend a day kayaking or taking a water taxi to explore the park's golden beaches and clear waters. For stunning views, hike a section of the Abel Tasman Coast Track. If you want to have the best experience, read this Must have experiences in Abel Tasman National Park.

Day 13-14: Queenstown

Drive to Queenstown, New Zealand's adventure capital. Try bungee jumping, jet boating, or skydiving if you're feeling brave. For a more relaxed day, take a wine tour in nearby Gibbston Valley or enjoy a scenic cruise on Lake Wakatipu.

You can make changes to your New Zealand's road trip itinerary according to your convenience as well. Keep in mind that having the ultimate fun is the main goal of your New Zealand road trip.
